Back to School
Autumn has finally arrived. I love this season, the most beautiful here in southern Brazil. The eternally blue sky, swept by an almost ever-present wind, the cool, dry weather. In my life too, fall has arrived, without bands or fanfare, but bringing with it great changes. Now it's time to go back to school. After the self-imposed challenge of writing chronicles or short stories almost daily for the last seven months, I'm going to start a creative writing course in April.
I've spent the last few months testing my tastes and abilities. I had a brief flirtation with generating narrated versions of my texts after learning about the immense difficulties involved in the daily lives of those who lose their sight due to degenerative diseases. However, my experience with narration programs that use artificial intelligence has not been the best. There is still a long way to go, especially when it comes to the stability of the voices, the transmission of emotion, and the pronunciation of some words in Portuguese.
On the other hand, the use of generative AI to create images to illustrate my short stories has been fruitful. The image creation programs I've tested so far are full of prejudices and sometimes show incredible difficulty in responding to my detailed prompts. Even so, this tool has proved to be an excellent alternative, as I need illustrations but don't want to bother with legal issues concerning the copyright of images made available on the internet.
The result I got in my attempts to generate short stories using IA was of very low quality, showing that the fear that writers have expressed about unfair competition with IA in the generation of novels and short stories is still a long way from reality. Still. However, AI is excellent for brainstorming and for carrying out the research that underpins the stories we are writing.
In the months I've been waiting for the course I'm enrolled on to start, I've attended lectures with writers and a free course offered by PUC-RS. But my experience has shown that even in the field of creative writing, professionals are far from unanimous. Each group of authors follows its own rules. But when the text is bad, everyone seems to agree. I hope to soon break away from this unanimity...
